The irony called life

Trust was no longer inherent... he had long since realized the importance of being prudent. It doesn't pay to get deceived under such circumstances anyway. Experience told him that.

She didn't know what trust was all about, let alone prudence. No, she wasn't ignorant... she merely saw things from a different point of view...

He scanned the people in view for that give away body language... twitching fingers, quivering eyelids, that labile tongue wetting those already moist lips... the countenance which one is apt to possess when confusion and haste override indecision leading to an erroneous move!

She saw the same things that he did but was oblivious of the details he so meticulously assimilated. She was rather amazed at the sheer number of living beings in their vehicles, rushing hither and thither on the streets that sunny afternoon. Her lovely big round green eyes took in everything yet missed such a lot.

He contemplated the movement of the vehicles, his eyes darted about focusing for nanoseconds on the indicators and the brake lights... a bit further down the street, she admired the rainbow colours, keeping track of the count of colors on her little fingers, the glint of sunlight off the colored metal having an entrancing effect on her.

No wonder he caught a glimpse of the sweaty driver, the epitome of frustration and recklessness, driving the rampant lorry coming from the opposite direction, rattling and swerving violently. His exposure to such instances in his 10 odd years of driving saw him steer clear of harm's way, if only by an inch! She in her five measly years of existence, for the first time finding herself on her own in such a crowded environment... by sheer mischance not having her tiny fingers enveloped in her parents' assuring and protective grip!

The whizzing monster hurtling down the road was the last thing she ever marvelled at as she strayed out onto the tar road... The screeching of the brakes somewhere behind told him someone back there hadn't been cautious enough, and he moved on...
